Lagerfeld inspected the costumes as a fashion critic for a French TV network. Asked to bring in mind the day, he said: "I remarked on the English marriage for the state channel. An occasion like that is fun to do because I can do gags, and jokes of the lowest kind are not against my mindset.

"I act the things they ask me. But this was not a set this was the selections of this kind of woman for this kind of ceremonial: the bad sections, the ugly hats, the short skirts on fat legs."

The 77-year-old designer did not name names but Princess Beatrice and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson were between the visitors whose preference of headgear fascinated harsh remarks.

In his April 29 remarks, Lagerfeld damned the Duke of Edinburgh's Grenadier Guards identical with faint praise, sniffing: "Whatever you say, it's superior than an ugly suit," and refused to talk the Queen's yellow outfit.

However, he was full of admire for the Duchess of Cambridge's dress. "It's a bridal dress of very sophisticated detail, much more refined than the one Diana wore," he said. "Alexander McQueen's costumes are always very graceful. It's very beautiful and comparatively model with a somewhat touch of the 1950s that recalls Marilyn Monroe or Queen Elizabeth II's dress.

"The lace is beautiful, particularly the inflated veil, and the tiara not too superior. It's ravishing and the length of the train is wonderful."

One guest who did obtain the Lagerfeld seal of approval was Prince Marie-Chantal of Greece. She went to the ceremonial in Chanel haute fashion designer.

"They all do it in the political world. They get horny from politics, from power. And he had incredible attractions. He is completely charming.
"He's fun, he's great, he's a sweet man - as long as you're not a woman. That's the dilemma."

No one to embarrass away from dispute, Lagerfeld has earlier condemned women who object to seeing shrunken models in fashion magazines. He sent away them as "fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the TV, stating that thin models are ugly".

He also told Carine Roitfeld, ex-editor-in-chief of French Vogue, that she was lucky to have gorgeous offspring because "it would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter".
The unconventional designer experienced a makeover of his own a few years ago when he misplaced 92lbs in 13 months because he desired to wear slim-fitting fashion.

He accepted that his forthright comments are not to all tastes. "Perhaps I should consider deeper and open my mouth not as speedily," he said.
