Indian Census: Half of the people have Mobile phones ‘but not Toilets’

The fresh census figures reveal that almost half of the Indian population (1.2 billion) has no toilet facility at home but on the other hand more than people own a mobile phone.

Only 46.9% of the 246.6 million households have lavatories while 49.8% defecate in the open. The left behind 3.2% utilizes public toilets.

Census 2011 data on houses, household services and assets show that 63.2% of homes have a telephone.
Analysts claim the data reveal the multifaceted ambiguity s of the Indian system.

According to the census a country where millions have retrieved to cutting-edge technology and end user commodities but a greatest part of poor who not have access to even necessary facilities.

Around 77% of houses in the eastern state of Jharkhand have no toilet amenities, while the figure is 76.6% for Orissa and 75.8% in Bihar. All three are in the midst of India's poorest states with largest populations which live on less than a dollar.

"Open defecation goes on to be a huge alarm for the country as about half of the people do it," Registrar General and Census Commissioner C Chandramouli said while published the fresh statistics.

"Cultural and traditional causes and a lack of education are the major reasons for this polluted practice. We have to do much more in these fronts," he said.

The records also show that Indians now mainly live in nuclear families with 70% of homes consisting of only one couple - a vivid change in a country where combine families were always the model.

The census data also reveal modification in how people access information and entertainment.

In excess of half the people - 53.2% - have a mobile phone.

There has been a 16% boost in the numerous homes with TV sets, while the use of radios has decrease by 15%.

The figures reveal that 47.2% of households have a TV while just 19.9% have a radio.
