A Tokyo ward office has apologized for mistakenly announcing major earthquakes via its community wireless system earlier this month although the actual quakes were relatively small.
The Bunkyo Ward Office announced that "there was a major earthquake now" on two separate occasions -- on the night of March 14 and the predawn hours of March 16. The content of the wireless communication announcement had been intended for quakes measuring at lower 5 or greater on the Japanese seismic scale of 7, but the actual quakes that hit the area had registered an intensity of 2 to 3.
The ward office has put up on its website an apology to its residents over the misinformation. Read More
