For the tiny week-old baby girl whose mother wanted to name her Carmen, life and death were profoundly intertwined in a matter of moments.
The 5-pound infant was delivered by emergency surgery Oct. 27 — two days after a hit-and-run driver plowed into her 22-year-old mother, Diann Ford, as she walked home from work in San Marcos.
The pregnant single mom, then only a week away from her due date, was bruised but otherwise showed no obvious signs of serious injury when hospitalized for observation in Austin.
