Jesse Gates arrested after storming into church service and waving shotgun at worshipers in South Carolina

A shot-gun wielding man was overpowered by members of a congregation after he stormed into a church during Sunday services.

Jesse Gates, 38, allegedly kicked in the doors of the church before pointing his gun at the pastor.

But worshippers had spotted the alleged gunman through the windows of the church in South Carolina and locked the doors

When he kicked in a side door, a half-a dozen church members hiding in the wings jumped him and then locked the doors until officers arrived, police said.

Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies said no one was hurt on Sunday at the Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Boiling Springs.

Deputies charged Gates with burglary, disturbing a place of worship, and attempted kidnapping.

The kidnapping charge relates to the allegation that he pointed his gun at the pastor. Read More
