Police said they were analyzing new facts against Craig Thomson.
Mr. Thomson has rejected any misdeed, and has already said an unidentified friend forged his signature to use the card.
A confidence for theft or fraud could topple Julia Gillard's minority government, which has a running majority of only one seat.
Prime Minister Gillard has articulated "full confidence" in Mr. Thomson, and said any inquiry into his behavior should be permitted to run its course.
The new facts were given to police by a rival politician.
"This communication has now been quoted for internal evaluation to examine whether a criminal offence has happened," police said in a statement.
It is claimed that Mr. Thomson paid for escort services and drew out more than $A100,000 ($104,000; £63,000) in cash on a card issued by the Health Services Union during his service there in 2003 to 2005.
Mr. Thomson, who elected parliament member after the 2007 election, has said that other union officials had admitted to that credit card, and refuses any crime.
The country's services advisory body, Fair Work Australia, is also implementing its own inquiry.
Mr. Thomson wins his seat in the Central Coast of New South Wales with a little majority of just 5%.
The Gillard government's deep lower esteem, the Liberals would be considered to succeed a by-election at a run.
If Labor loses that seat, certainly, it also deprives from its parliamentary majority.
The charges against Mr. Thomson were first highlighted two years before by local newspapers. He grew a insult case against the newspapers - which he later gone down.
It has since been reported that the New South Wales Labor party helped Mr. Thomson with $A90,000 towards his legal dues. Liquidation bans people from sitting in parliament.
