Eddie Murphy: Sensible picking to host Oscars?

The greatest one-night show in the star-studded town is going to comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, who's been entitled host of the 84th yearly Academy Awards, in February.

As CBS News provider Priya David Clemens revealed, Murphy looks like to have made it all in a showbiz career across nearly 30 years, from "Saturday Night Live" to pioneering comic to A-list leading man.

At present, as Oscars host, Murphy will be commenced to a whole a new generation.

Entertainment Weekly's Jessica Shaw says basically, "Getting Eddie Murphy is a homerun. He's a comedy legend."

In a written testimonial, Murphy says he's "tremendously honored to join the biggest list of past Academy Award hosts, from (Bob) Hope and (Johnny) Carson to (Billy) Crystal, (Steve) Martin and (Whoopi) Goldberg, between others."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' try to persuade a teenager viewer with actors Anne Hathaway and James Franco as hosts this year was a collapse, Clemens says and, by selecting Murphy, show presenters are going back to the tried-and-true -- a star comedian.

Movie fans CBS News spoke to provide the pick a thumbs-up.

"I think he's going to be a fantastic host, he's very funny, he's witty, got good joking," said one.

"I've been waiting for this man to host the Oscars for a long time, 'cause he's good on his feet, you know, good comedian, and they need anybody, somebody good like that," said another.

"He's ideal, ideal for matures, he's for children, he's for everybody. He's good,' said a third.

Though Murphy was an Oscar contender in 2007 for "Dreamgirls," it's been years since he's had a great hit at the box office.

But Variety's Brian Lowry raised that, "Eddie Murphy is a several talented star, but if you see at his profession over the last ten years, actually, this century, the most victorious role he's had has been as the energetic donkey in Shrek."

Right now, though, Murphy has an opportunity to highlight his profession

Said Entertainment Weekly's Shaw, "Is Eddie Murphy going to be a big? Does he have all the records? Certainly. Can he pull off the gig? We'll see."

When he achieves a Golden Globe for "Dreamgirls," Murphy told CBS News he was prepare to take on something, saying, "I like to do all sorts of many things. I initiated in reality teenager, and I've been in the movie business a long time. But I'm quiet a comparatively young man, so I'm going to endeavor to do diverse stuff, so when I see back, I can look back and say, 'Knockout, I did everything!"'

Possibly not unintentionally, Clemens notes, Murphy has a film coming out this year directed by Brett Ratner -- one of the Oscar show's producers. It's a comedy called "Tower Heist."
