Veena Malik, a Pakistani actress has filed an insult suit against FHM India for a "morphed" cover photo of her posing naked with the initials of Pakistan's spy agency, ISI, on her arm.

One of the world's most influential intelligence agencies, a Bollywood glamour puss and a missing pair of knickers – this month's cover up of FHM India has all the risqué components required for utmost lads' mag impact.

But even before the December issue hits the news-stands the front page has set off a media anger, intimidation of lawful action and a assure by Pakistan's government to inspect whether the criminal photo has been doctored.

Veena Malik, a Pakistani actress, acknowledge posing topless with the letters ISI stenciled on her arm, a position to Pakistan's shadowy Inter-Services Intelligence directorate in a rude dig at Indian suspicion. Her hands defend her humility.

However, she has blamed the publication of doctoring the image, leaving her fully nude.

That cover has now been replaced online with one in which her slim waist is covered by a bullets belt. "I approved to a photo shoot and having an ISI tattoo in an entertaining way but I did not have any naked pictures. My photos have been morphed," she told a Pakistani TV channel.

Her lawyers say they have served a lawful notice on FHM India demanding the December edition be reserved and $2m in compensation.

The tattoo alone would have been enough to aggravate a reaction in India, where the ISI is normally liable for terrorist attacks.

However, naked pictures are rare in traditionalist India – and rarer still in Muslim Pakistan, where clerics have condemned the photo.

Add in an astringent local enmity between two nuclear powers that have been to war three times and the consequence is a volatile mix.
Islamabad's interior minister has even been pulled into the quarrel. When asked by newsmen whether Pakistan would "follow the issue" lawfully, Rehman Malik said: "First, let us see whether it is genuine or counterfeit."

The editor of FHM India, Kabeer Sharma, claimed he was confused by Malik's accusations.

Maybe she is facing some kind of repercussion, so maybe that's why she is refuting it," he said.

"We have not photo shopped or forged the cover. This is what she looks like, she has an astonishing body."
